Kinesiology Taping and Strapping

There are different types of taping to help facilitate muscle performance. It is important to note that taping alone is not as effective when it is used in conjunction with other treatments (e.g. manual therapy).

Kinesiology Taping

The use of K-Tape was developed for the use of athletes which was first seen on the seance in the Beijing 2008 Olympics. But you don’t have to be an athlete to experience the benefits.

K-tape can be used for either to aid the healing process of an acute injury or reduce the pain from a chronic injury.

Benefits:

  • Helps blood flow to the area, resulting in a increase in oxygenated blood and decrease inflammation and swelling.
  • Helps body’s lymphatic system to drain waste products (e.g. lactic acid), enhancing the individual muscles ability to perform for longer.
  • Reduce pain levels of an individual.
  • Helping re-educating muscles by guiding them through their functions in order to provide correct posture.

Strapping (Cohesive Taping)

In comparison to the K-tape, this tape is used for its splinting mechanism. This type of tape is more fundamental when stability is more crucial.

An example being an individual have a ankle sprain therefore, we want the tape to create support for the ligament to reduce the risk of it being lengthened causing more damage to the tissue. Furthermore, reducing the time frame of recovery.
